TEDxSTEM September event

Continuing the success of our first TEDx event in June, another TEDxSTEM was hosted in NUS on 19/09 and we welcomed some of the new comers to our event. In this month update, we will provide some useful information about TED and TEDx.

TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) is popularly known for “Ideas worth spreading” talks on a wide range of topics. TED was founded in 1984 as a one-off event. Nowadays, TED Talks can be freely viewed at http://www.ted.com or http://www.youtube.com/TED. In November 2012, TED Talks reached its first billionth view online.

The mission of TED begins:

We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we’re building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.

Past presenters of TED include Bill Clinton, Malcolm Gladwell, Larry Page, Sergey Bin, Al Gore, Gordon Brown, Bill Gates and many Nobel winners.

TEDx is an initiative by TED to license independent conferences to give communities, communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. At Singapore, there is TEDx Singapore. At Vietnam, there are TEDx Saigon and TEDx Mekong.

At STEM, passionate and talented individuals from different background and working industry gather for a common goal: exchanging ideas and learning from each other. Therefore, it is the best place to for TEDx to happen. More importantly, TEDx STEM will also serve as a platform to develop various skills for our members such as public speaking, crowd-engaging and storytelling.

The 3 talks delivered in September are:
- “TRIZ – The problem solving tool that transforms SAMSUNG into a world-class innovative company” by Nam Nguyen
- “DSLR – Behind the scene” (Part 2) by Dr. Luu Quang Hung
- “Pay it forward – the inspiring story of Orchid scholarship” by Dr. Luu Quang Hung
