Science & Engineering family gathering - Mar 29 2008
Sunday, 13 April 2008

Another exciting and helpful event for VN2020 members was organized by Science & Engineering family on Saturday Mar 29 2008. This time, the family has the honor to meet Mr. Michael Warren, Asia Chief Executive of Logica, a USD 5-billion company.

By sharing the videos of successful people from many countries, Michael presented an impressive and useful talk to our Members on “How to succeed in life for young graduates”. This would definitely be valuable for all members attending his talk as it has offered many practical advices to them.

Following the talk, we were treated with some of the most delicious Vietnamese foods in Singapore ! It was indeed a great chance to get together listening to an experienced speaker, enjoying the good foods, widening our circle of contacts and strengthening the bonding between our members ...

During the BBQ, our members also had a chance to learn some more useful advices shared by Michael and his wife, a lawyer.

Once again. we would like to express our appreciation to the Host Parent of our Science & Engineering family, Anh Tuan and Chi Thanh Chau, for their wonderful support on organizing this and other previous events. Thanks also for having introduced Michael and his wife to VIETNAM 2020.

For more information about the event and presentations by Michael, please have a look at the following link: http://www.vietnam-2020.com/forum/index.php?topic=215.0

Career Embarkation Workshop - March 1, 2008
Wednesday, 12 March 2008
The idea of a workshop to equip our final year students with the reality of working life has been incubated by Bizad family since the group was assembled. Our family members are mostly new graduates who learned the painful lessons when they first started work. The inspiration to share the experience led them to pool time, effort and resources to organize the very first workshop, titled “CAREER EMBARKATION”, at NUS campus on Saturday 1st March , 2008

Targeted at third and final year students, the workshop was an informal 3-hour session where speakers and panel members came and talked about various aspects of the first 3 months of work. Sis Christie, who has worked with Intel for 12 years and been in various positions, enlightened the students with her presentation on “Change and Transition”. How to recognize changes and put oneself in the transition mode so as to adapt to the change was the theme of the first presentation. Interestingly, the presentation pointed out that although changes happen at every minute and in every day, one can be bypassed by changes and let the opportunities slip through the fingers. Be alert, be pro-active and stay positive are the key to successfully bring oneself ahead of all the changes.

Sis Thuy, a junior member of the family, shared with the participants her real experiences when she joined Ernst & Young. Having been with the company for one and a half year, Thuy has gone through her disappointments with the unmet expectations, the sweet and bitterness of being the fresh grad joining a big company. The short presentation was not meant to “scare” the graduates-to-be, but rather to help them adjust their expectations better.

Following the informative and helpful presentations was the panel discussion whose panel members are bro Tran Duc Vi from Science and Engineering family, bro Tran Dang Khoa from IT family, bro Quang Anh from Real Estate family, sis Christie and bro Son from Bizad family. Bro Son, as a facilitator to the discussion, briefly yet vividly talked about the pitfalls in the workplace, such as office romance, careless use of bcc, bypassing direct supervisor, etc…

Participants raised questions about their own situations such as how to decide whether to pursue higher education, whether or not to stay in the job which is neither good nor bad, etc… The discussion was heated up when the participants shared their own stories . The workshop, at the time, became like a round table discussion and everyone really got involved.

The workshop ended on time but the discussion still went on in the refreshment cum mingling session. Speakers and panel members were circled by students and asked for more advice. It was a successful and useful workshop for both mentors of Vietnam2020 and students/participants, promising more workshops to come in the future.
